How to Use

  1. Turn the volume up. Dead Air works best in a quiet, dark room. Headphones help too.
  2. Start a session. The box sweeps through the FM band, and you'll hear static, tones and gaps between stations.
  3. Ask a question. Say it out loud, or tap one of the questions on screen so it's saved in your log.
  4. Listen. When a word comes through, it's spoken through the static and shown on screen.
  5. Watch the EMF meter. The five lights react to changes in the magnetic field around your device.
  6. Review your log. Every session is saved with timestamps. Open one to share the transcript as an image.

Dead Air is made for entertainment. Replies are chosen at random by the app.

FAQ

Are the replies real?
Dead Air is for entertainment. The words are chosen at random by the app from a built-in list, and questions only change which kind of word is more likely. What you make of them is up to you.

What does the sweep speed do?
It sets how long the box stays on each frequency: 100, 200 or 300 milliseconds. Faster sweeps sound busier. Slower sweeps give each station more time.

How often do words come through?
Open Settings and choose an Activity level: Quiet, Normal or Active. A question can get a reply sooner, and sometimes there's no reply at all.

What does the EMF meter measure?
It uses your device's magnetometer and shows how much the magnetic field changes from its recent average. Metal objects, speakers, chargers and moving the phone will all make it react.

I can't hear anything.
Turn up the volume and check that the Spoken Words setting is on. Dead Air plays sound even when the silent switch is on.

Does Dead Air record my voice?
No. The app never uses the microphone. Only the questions you tap and the words the box shows are saved to your log.

How do I delete a session?
Open the log, then swipe left on a session and tap Delete.

Dead Air (“the App”) is provided by an independent developer (“we”). This policy explains how the App handles information.

Information We Collect

We do not collect any personal information. The App has no accounts, no sign-in, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and it does not connect to the internet.

Session log
Your sessions, questions and received words are stored only on your device.

The App does not use the microphone.

Purchase
The App is purchased through the App Store. Apple processes the payment, and we do not receive your name, email address or payment information. Please see Apple’s Privacy Policy for details.

Sharing

If you share a transcript, the image goes only where you choose to send it.

Children’s Privacy

We do not collect, store or share any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Deleting Your Data

You can delete any session from the log. Deleting the App removes all of its data from your device.
